Visible skin conditions like psoriasis still attract unfair stares, comments, and even wrong assumptions of contagiousness in many parts of India — and while that judgment says nothing true about you, learning to navigate it is a real, necessary part of living with this condition. I’ve been on the receiving end of enough of it to know it’s not something you can simply reason your way out of feeling.
What actually helped me get through it
Psoriasis is not contagious, cannot spread from person to person, and is not caused by poor hygiene — but not everyone knows that, and you won’t always have the energy to educate every stranger who stares. Some days, the most useful response is simply walking away from a conversation that isn’t worth your energy.
What made the biggest difference for me was the people who chose to stand by me without hesitation — my husband, my parents, and a close friend who never let my skin change how she treated me. Their steady, unwavering support did more for how I carried myself than anything I told myself in the mirror.
Reframing your own inner dialogue
Your worth isn’t defined by your skin. That’s easy to write and much harder to actually believe on a bad flare day, which is exactly why practicing it matters — small daily habits like practicing gratitude for what your body does for you, and choosing clothing that makes you feel confident rather than clothing that only hides your skin, genuinely shift how you carry a hard day.
On marriage, relationships, and disclosure
This is one of the more painful, specific worries I hear from readers in India, and I won’t pretend there’s a simple answer. What I will say: anyone worth building a life with will see you as a whole person, not a skin condition, the same way my husband did from day one. Surrounding yourself with people who reflect that back to you matters more than trying to convince people who won’t.
Important note: If stigma or judgment is affecting your mental health significantly, please talk to someone — a trusted person in your life, or a counselor. You don’t have to carry this entirely on your own.
Frequently asked questions
Is psoriasis contagious?
No. Psoriasis is a non-contagious autoimmune condition and cannot spread through touch, sharing items, or any physical contact.
How do I respond to intrusive questions about my skin?
A short, factual answer — “it’s psoriasis, an autoimmune skin condition, not contagious” — is usually enough. You don’t owe anyone a longer explanation than you’re comfortable giving.
I write more openly about the emotional side of this journey, and the people who carried me through it, in my eBook How I Reversed My Psoriasis.
