Nail psoriasis causes pitting, discoloration, thickening, and sometimes separation of the nail from the nail bed — and it’s frequently mistaken for a fungal infection, which means a lot of people treat it with the wrong thing entirely. If antifungal creams haven’t helped a stubborn nail problem, psoriasis is worth ruling out.
How to recognize it
Look for small pitted depressions across the nail surface, yellow-brown discoloration, thickening of the nail plate, and in more advanced cases, the nail lifting away from the skin underneath (onycholysis). It can affect fingernails, toenails, or both, and often shows up alongside skin plaques elsewhere, though not always.
Natural care that actually protects nails
- Keep nails trimmed short to reduce the chance of the nail catching and lifting further.
- Massage a small amount of coconut oil or a vitamin E–enriched oil into the cuticles and nail bed daily to keep the surrounding skin from cracking.
- Avoid gel manicures, acrylics, and aggressive cuticle cutting during an active flare — any trauma to the nail can worsen it.
- Wear gloves for wet or chemical-heavy housework, since prolonged moisture exposure makes nail psoriasis worse.
Where diet fits in
Nail psoriasis responds to the same underlying inflammation as skin plaques, so the dietary changes that help your skin — cutting nightshades, dairy, and processed food, adding anti-inflammatory vegetables and healthy fats — support nail healing too, even though it’s slower to show visible change than skin.
Important note: Nail changes can also signal a fungal infection or other conditions, so get a proper diagnosis before assuming it’s psoriasis, especially if only one nail is affected.
Frequently asked questions
Does nail psoriasis mean my psoriasis is getting worse?
Not necessarily — nail involvement doesn’t always correlate with skin severity, though it is more common in people who also have psoriatic arthritis.
How long does it take for a psoriatic nail to grow out clear?
Nails grow slowly, so it can take several months of consistent care to see a fully clear nail grow in, even after the underlying inflammation has settled.
