Neem for Psoriasis: Benefits, Uses, and Precautions

Neem leaves, ground into a paste with a little turmeric, are one of the most effective natural remedies for psoriasis plaques because of neem’s antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also one of the oldest remedies in Indian households, which is partly why it’s so easy to find and so cheap to try.

How I use neem on plaques

  • Grind fresh neem leaves into a paste.
  • Mix in a small amount of turmeric powder.
  • Apply the mixture to affected areas.
  • Leave it on for 20–30 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water.
  • Use daily for the best results.

If fresh neem leaves aren’t easy to source where you live, neem oil is a good alternative. Mix equal parts neem oil and coconut oil, apply to affected skin, and leave on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing off.

Why neem specifically helps psoriasis

Psoriasis plaques are inflamed, prone to cracking, and vulnerable to secondary infection when the skin barrier is broken. Neem’s antibacterial and antifungal action helps protect compromised skin, while its anti-inflammatory compounds work alongside remedies like turmeric and aloe vera rather than against them — I often rotate between the two depending on what my skin needs that week.

Precautions worth knowing

Neem is potent. Some people find it drying when used too frequently, so I’d watch how your skin responds over the first week and scale back if it feels tight or irritated rather than soothed. It should never be taken internally in concentrated form during pregnancy.

Important note: Patch-test any new neem preparation on a small area first, especially neem oil, which is more concentrated than the leaf paste.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use neem and turmeric together every day?

Yes, this combination is gentle enough for daily use for most people, and it’s one of the remedies I relied on the most consistently.

Does neem help with scalp psoriasis too?

Neem oil diluted in a carrier oil can be massaged into the scalp the same way as other oil treatments, though tea tree oil is generally better tolerated on the scalp specifically.

Neem is one piece of a much bigger routine — diet, remedies, and lifestyle together — that I’ve laid out fully in my eBook How I Reversed My Psoriasis.
